What is Promethazine Tablets?

Promethazine Hydrochloride 25mg treats short-term insomnia and allergic reactions such as hay fever and rashes. It can also prevent nausea and vomiting.

Is Promethazine Tablets right for me?

Like all medicines, Promethazine Hydrochloride 25mg may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:

Dry mouth
Blurred vision
Constipation
Difficulty passing urine, especially in the elderly or children
Feeling drowsy, sleepy or dizzy
Headaches
Loss of appetite
Sickness and vomiting
Indigestion
Increased sensitivity to the sun
Skin rashes, including itching and red and raised lumps

Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

If you notice any of the following side effects, stop taking this medication immediately and contact your healthcare provider:

Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
Muscle stiffness or shaking
Loss of control in the muscles in your face or head
Unusual movements of the tongue, facial muscle spasms, rolling eyes or trembling
Over-active behaviour in children

Warnings
Promethazine Hydrochloride may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

You suffer from dizziness
You suffer from drowsiness
You suffer from headaches

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if:

You have asthma or bronchitis
You have epilepsy
You have serious heart problems
You have liver or kidney problems
You have a stomach blockage
You have difficulty passing urine
You have hearing problems
You have narrow-angle glaucoma
You have Reye syndrome

This medication may interfere with test results such as pregnancy tests by urine samples or skin tests. Do not take this medication 3 days before a skin test.

Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product.

Do not take promethazine hydrochloride if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) to treat depression in the last two weeks.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:

Tricyclic antidepressants e.g. amitriptyline or dosulepin
Medicines to help you sleep or feel more relaxed e.g. diazepam or zolpidem
Pain relievers e.g. aspirin
Anticholinergic medicines used for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), asthma or a weak bladder

Age restrictions
Promethazine hydrochloride is not suitable for children under 2 years old.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
This medication should not be taken 2 weeks before you are due to give birth. Do not take this product if you are breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.

Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol whilst you are taking this medication.

Driving and operating machinery
This medication can make you feel dizzy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you feel safe enough to do so.
