Product Overview
What is EMLA Cream 5%?
EMLA Cream 5% is an anaesthetic cream used to numb areas of the skin before an injection or a minor procedure.
It is ideal for reducing the pain before a needle, especially for children who are nervous or worried.
Is EMLA Cream 5% right for me?
EMLA Cream 5% may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
Mild skin reactions
Numbness or tingling
Burning, itching or warmth
Methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder, more common in infants)
Small, dot-shaped bleeding around the area of the procedure
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
Warnings
EMLA Cream 5% may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if:
You or your child have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
You or your child have methemoglobinemia
You or your child have atopic dermatitis
Do not use this cream on broken skin, where there is a skin rash or on eczema.
Do not use it in or near the eyes or inside the nose, ears or mouth. Do not apply it to your anus or the genitals of children.
Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before using this product.
You must tell your healthcare provider if you or your child are taking the following medication:
Sulphonamides and nitrofurantoin (used to treat infections)
Phenytoin and phenobarbitol (used to treat epilepsy)
Medicines used to treat an uneven heartbeat e.g. amiodarone
Cemetadine or beta-blockers
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any new product.
Important information
Consult your doctor before use if you are taking any other medicines or if you have a health condition not mentioned in the patient information leaflet.
Always read the patient information leaflet before use.
May cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how your body reacts to this treatment.
Do not take more than one tablet in any 24 hours.
This medicine must not be taken by women.
